quest

notes on a presentation by
michael wesch on wonder
via the notes by @wfryer

living with questions
leading to other questions
living in wonder

questions burning inside
a courageous learner
can harness the world’s
largest distraction device
fascinated by mystery,
searching, grappling for answers
on the edge of experience

beyond boxes
shared vulnerability,
open connections
come to the edge of what we know,
ask someone else to join us
we are all so fragile

avoiding risk
closing down connections
you cannot numb emotions selectively
numbing to pain
numbing to joy
contracting scope
we explore 11% of the area our parents explored

co-create the world

wonder is not just a capacity
love is not just a capacity
we can practice, learn
our life can become richer because of it

some really interesting thoughts...

beyond boxes
shared vulnerability,
open connections
come to the edge of what we know,
ask someone else to join us
we are all so fragile

jumped out at me...we are fragile and that sharing and creating of connections is a risk but it is often when we come to that edge we learn the most...smiles.

wesch always has interesting things to say. he wrote the video
'the machine is us/ing us'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLlGopyXT_g

there was a similar talk on the radio here this morning.

This is a wonderful distillation and exploration of these ideas. Thank you for the links, really fascinating stuff.

we can def. learn and explore...courageous learners..i like that... letting go of prejudice, risking things and living life with an open mind takes us really far me thinks

I love the idea of co-creating the world, all joining together with a new idea, almost reminds me of John Lennon's imagine. Interesting thoughts and I might go check out that video.

Loved that. I'm so glad the web exists. I've read so much by people whose work I would never have known about without it - including yours

I agree with the idea that we can learn love and learn wonder, and if we do so our life WILL be richer. Enjoyd your thoughts here.

I love the positive side to creating, learning and openning connections. I want to never be satisfied of what I know, and always have the joy of learning. This spoke to me, thank you ~

Asking questions can change the world, its the only way we learn and grow. I especially love the last two lines

we can practice, learn
our life can become richer because of it

I love this delicate probing of our group psyche, the need to know, but maybe not much for so many--I especially like the phrasing in the second stanza.

Thoughts can become...and isn't that what writing is all about. Nicely done.

It's important to just ask the question. I'm curious about 11%.

'closing down connections

numbing to pain
numbing to joy'

...the truth of that popped out at me. Thoughtful writing.

colleen he was talking about the way that us older folk used to get on our bikes and ride as far as our legs would go or go exploring or climb trees or have adventures even walking to school by ourselves that children these days do not perhaps get to do because society is more dangerous/cautious now.

thank you for the comments folks =)

"we are all so fragile" and ain't that the absolute truth.

This was thought-provoking and beautiful.

Questions sure abound all around.

Well that is what community poets are doing ..making connection, sharing vulnerability, learning stuff but you cannot stop the tsunami of change that sweeps society into a direction that I find alarming.

It has been predicted by Alduous Huxley in Brave new World decades ago.Sorry to sound so pessimistic.
Joy and madness is the best revenge..keep laughing as they try to push you further over the edge
As you can see i am not in one of my best moods today Miss Chilli:)

A fine poem. These lines particularly resonated with me:-

questions burning inside
a courageous learner
can harness the world’s
largest distraction device

Stanza 4 is so true:
'numbing to pain
numbing to joy
contracting scope'

I wonder what the 11% is a reference to though.

Most definitely agree with the ideas about wonder and searching, and you express them so elegantly.

Trusting enough to open up is difficult. Life is filled with questions. Matching up the answers is difficult.

Truly said lucy! One cannot stifle feelings, just to pick and choose! It flows naturally! Nicely!

Poems from notes is a wondrous feat. It helps us to internalize and recall that which is prescient, that which strikes a chord.
